Report of the Harbour of Rye Adversary Committee held at the Rye Harbour Sailing Club on November8th

So far, this year 16 commercial vessels have traded at Rye Wharf. Furness Bottom Ash, Aggregate, Grain and Beans being the most commodities shipped/unshipped. The Moto Vessel Lady Mary carried 2.969ton which is the biggest cargo unloaded at the Wharf to date. The Harbour Master reported that Navigation Beacons no 17,27,38 are now lit following consultation with Trinity House. This will allow all shipping and leisure boats to safely navigate the river during the hours of darkness. It was also reported that some of the wooden timbers supporting the walkway on the northern end of the Admiralty Jetty have rotted and require replacing. A temporary repair has been undertaken and a structural Survey has been completed and now waiting for contractors to price for the required work.  Some of the wooden vertical fender board need replacing on Strand Quay and replacement costs have been estimated to be in the region of 30K. Sadly another tree has been damaged by high winds.  A pre-dredge survey has been completed. This allows the EA to accurately describe the required dredging volumes which are currently being tendered for, previous cost was in the region of 60K. It is hoped that dredging will take place early next year. It has been reported that several small inflatable tenders have been stolen around the Rock Channel area. This is a reminder that more care should be taken with making leisure craft more secure. A meeting took place in September between the fisherman and representatives of DEFRA to discuss future changes following Brexit. A short presentation was given by from Natural England regarding the completion of the Coastal Path around Britain, they have yet to agree the section from Eastbourne to Camber, but the plan is that the path is completed by the year 2020.

  • Rye Harbour and waterways proposed take over Posted on 28 February 2017

It has been said that Rye has a unique flavour which has made it a novel place for visiting yachtsman from the UK and Europe to take in on a cruise, this is part of our heritage and should be protected. With so many people now finding Rye a more economical place to keep a yacht or motor boat away from the soulless and more commercial marina environment lets hope any future management is mindful of this and does not ruin it by trying to over manage along national lines.

The Rhboa needs to be involved and considered with firm information as to whether the Canal &Waterway Trust intend to just take over management of the the waterways or will the take over include the land holdings? This information is not yet available. A large part of the Harbour income is sustained from the property portfolio, so what will be the future of the harbours assets? Will there be a Harbour consultation group with a say in what happens to our waterways?
